Why WordPress Sites Get Slow, and How to Fix Them

The usual causes of a slow WordPress site and a practical order for fixing them.

By 1 min read

A slow site loses visitors and rankings. On WordPress, the same few causes appear again and again.

Too many plugins and page builders

Each plugin can add CSS, JavaScript and database queries. Remove what you do not use and replace heavy plugins with lightweight alternatives or custom code.

Unoptimised images

Large photographs are the most common cause of slow pages. Resize images to the dimensions they display at, use WebP and enable lazy loading for images below the fold.

Weak hosting

Cheap shared hosting can respond slowly under load. Choose hosting with modern PHP versions, server-level caching and adequate resources.

No caching

Page caching serves a saved copy of pages instead of rebuilding them for each visitor. Combine it with browser caching for static files.

Render-blocking assets

Defer non-critical JavaScript, load only the CSS a page needs and host fonts locally.

A bloated database

Clean out post revisions, expired transients and spam data, and make sure queries are efficient.

Measure before and after with PageSpeed Insights and the Core Web Vitals report in Search Console, and fix the biggest issue first.
